MIT is most widely known for its intense focus on science and technology, and offers a total of 32 different academic disciplines.
The MIT campus is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, across the Charles River from Boston. The MIT Engineers, whose mascot is an ‘industrius’ beaver, compete in 30 NCAA Division III sports.

Greek and co-op life is a very important part of the MIT social experience, with 50% of male undergrads joining fraternities and 34% of female undergraduates joining sororities. There are 36 fraternities, sororities, and independent living groups (known as FSILGs) at MIT, mainly located across the river in the Back Bay. Since 2002, MIT has required all freshmen to live in the dormitory system.
